greentea

Green tea has never really been, well, my cup of tea. I love black tea (PG Tips!) and nothing beats coffee for me. But green tea? I tried many brands of it and they’re all ok, but nothing I cared to drink on a regular or irregular basis. Until I tried Harney & Sons. I [...]

When times are hard…

It’s true.

New York City

Today is a somber and beautiful day in New York City. There’s a quiet energy on the street, evidence that the tragedy is not forgotten, but that life goes on. 2011′s New York is like a regal and dazzling warrior — once wounded, now strong and full of resolve, dignity, heart.

I ask fellow New Yorkers if they were here that day. And it’s remarkable to hear the detailed accounts of their personal encounters with terror. Their eyes widen, heads shake and their vivid flashbacks are verbalized with amazing passion. They become the wounded warrior who survived, often haunted by those dark memories. Sometimes I think I see a flicker of fear in their eyes, but it’s always gone before I can recognize its presence.

And once the story is over, they are dazzling again: poised, proud, strong and optimistic. They are New York.

I wasn’t here on 9/11, but I’m so happy to be here today. There are 8 million reasons why this is the center of the universe.

I love you, New York.

And Real Umsden

In case you didn’t notice, my web address isn’t just my name (andrealumsden.com). It’s also an homage to a ‘real umsden’. What’s an umsden you ask? I’m afraid it’s a secret I’ll never tell. You see, the mystery of an umsden is far more interesting than the real deal.

What I will reveal, because nobody has ever thought of this before, is some brilliant advice: when you select your Uniform Resource Locator*, test how it reads. For example, penisland.net  is not a website about a land of penises. They actually sell pens (see for yourself – and don’t be too disappointed when you only find pens on an island: penisland.net). Clever?

As for the umsdens, well, let’s just say they’re happily hiding out on an island somewhere.

Better late than never, right?

Everyone has a blog these days. And everyone keeps asking me why I don’t have one, particularly one about motherhood. “You should start a mommy blog!”, they all say. “That’s a great idea!”, I always reply, unconvinced. This is not a “mommy blog”. This is just my blog. I will post whatever I want, whenever I want. I will try to avoid religion and politics. And I will shamelessly plug my husband’s amazing work (he’s an exceptional photographer and a genius in the kitchen). Sometimes I might write about my son, the love of my life. And yes, once in a while I will write about the exciting life of a mommy. But mostly, I’ll try to keep my loyal audience entertained, hanging on to my every word, faithfully following each post. So here goes…
